The fundamentals of golf

By: Keith Robson of Nick Ring Leisure - PGA Professional

GRIP
Left Hand : Thumb in the centre of the grip and turn hand until you can see two knuckles.
Right Hand : 'V' formed between thumb and first finger and hand covers left thumb with 'V' pointing towards chin.
Grip Pressure : Light as possible.

LINE UP
With feet together, bend forward from waist to put club behind ball. Bend legs slightly, so that weight is on the balls of the feet. If distance to ball is correct then butt of club should be 4 inches from the top of left knee.

ADDRESS
Weight 50/50, widen stance so that inside of feet are as wide as outside of shoulders. Left foot points at 11 o'clock, right foot straight. Shoulders should point parallel to target line.

TURF
To get the ball airborne you must hit the ball and then the turf. If from a tee, then hit the tee.

FINISH
Body should face target with weight 100% on left side. Club should be on the left shoulder. Eyes should be looking forward.

ROTATION
ONLY if you slice.
Right hand should rotate over left at impact.

BALL POSITIONS
SW, PW, 9, 8 & 7 Irons:
Ball positioned in middle of stance.
6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Irons 3, 5, 7 & 9 Woods:
Ball positioned one ball width left of centre.
1 & 3 Wood from tee:
Ball positioned two ball widths left of centre.

PRACTICE
Take all clubs to the practice session. Hit 5 balls with each club, starting with your shortest club. Use all your clubs, even the clubs you don't normally use.

BALL ABOVE YOUR FEET
Choose appropriate club. Adopt normal address position. Move your hands down the grip the amount the ball is above your feet. Golf swing tends to be flatter, so ball tends to go left - aim right.

BALL BELOW YOUR FEET
Choose appropriate club. Adopt normal address position. Move closer to the ball the amount the ball is below your feet. Golf swing tends to be steeper, so ball tends to go right- aim left.

UPHILL LIE
Choose appropriate club (the slope will increase loft). Tilt shoulders to angle of slope, ball position left of centre. Swing tends to be flatter, so ball tends to go left - aim right.

DOWNHILL LIE
Choose appropriate club (the slope with decrease loft). Tilt shoulders to angle of slope, ball position right of centre. Swing tends to be steeper, so ball tends to go right - aim left.
