Grand Canyon adventure
by CycleWild's Max Krames
We arrived in Las Vegas where we stayed overnight enjoying the sites of Las Vegas and travelled the following day to the North rim of the Grand Canyon.
On arrival we then went exploring along the rim to see some of the most spectacular scenes in the world stopping to take in the breathtaking rock formation around us. After the trek we then began to have our bikes fitted for us changing the saddles and putting all our extra bits and pieces.
After completing this task we all watched the sunset from viewpoints on the brim and found this breathtaking indeed. We then had an amazing meal and off to bed looking forward to the next day
Day 1
We awoke to a very strong wind blowing and a temperature drop from 90 degrees to 40 degrees overnight. Coupled with the fact that we were cycling at 9,000 ft this was making for a very difficult first day and this proved correct as we battled not only the initial climb out of the North Rim but the wind as well but we all made it and covered 95 miles on the day a super achievement by the 35 riders .At 6pm we all arrived in the town of Kanab exhausted but very high from our success.Day 2
We set off from Kanab and transferred to the start of the day's ride which took us off road for the whole day cycling in an upward direction to Kodachrome for our camping night. The route was awesome and the colours of the landscape fantastic. True desert country and we all made it to the campsite. Our Chance to sleep under the stars and have singing around the campfire a real western scene the distance covered around 70miles.Day 3
We left the campsite seeing incredible rock sculptures along the way and made our way to Bryce Canyon. The road up to the canyon is a steady climb of 15 miles but the rock formation is so interesting as we could see different chess figures in the rocks and the colours a deep pink just amazing, that we hardly noticed the hill.
Arriving in Bryce some of us took to the helicopter to get a bird's eye view of the Canyon Before going to explore and this was, for most, a highlight of the day.
After lunch we trekked into the canyon and had what could only be described as a magic mystery tour thru this amazing Canyon which for me is my favourite places in the world.
Day 4
After a lovely night's rest we set off on our next adventure and left Bryce on a new cycle way which winded its way thru the trees on a lovely tarmacced traffic free track in a downward direction before joining the main road in the direction of Zion National park .the roads have a wide side section which makes it ideal for cycling and we had a really enjoyable ride in undulating roads until we came to a dramatic off road section which gave us an opportunity to enjoy of road biking in a downward direction and a chance to practice our off road skills. At the end of this section we loaded our bikes on to the trailers and on the mini buses for our transfer into Zion National park. This is a truly exhilarating journey through fantastic formations and takes about 1 hour.
After arriving at our destination we had time to swim and sunbathe around the hotel before going out for a celebration meal to marvel over our endeavours.
